Chéri Hérouard (born January 6, 1881 in Rocroi , † June 2, 1961 in Paris ) was a French illustrator . He is best known for his decades of collaboration as a draftsman for the magazine La Vie Parisienne , as well as for his erotic drawings, which he published under the pseudonym Herric .

Hérouard was born Darling-Louis-Marie-Aime Haumé in Rocroi on the Franco-Belgian border in 1881. His father died in a riding accident before he was born, and when his mother remarried, he was given the name of the stepfather Hérouard. In 1884 the family moved to Pontivy in Brittany , where Hérouard attended school until he was 12, after which the family moved to Meaux where he did his baccalaureate at 16 . Also in Meaux, he married Blanche Henriette Tabillon on August 17, 1903.

His parents wanted to send him to the Saint-Cyr military school, but he wanted to become an artist and in this sense he was casually encouraged by Anatole France , whom he met when he wanted to present a work folder to the publisher Calmann-Lévy. In 1902 his drawings were first printed in Le Journal de la Jeunesse . In the following years he worked for this and other youth magazines ( La Semaine de Suzette , Mon Journal ), specifically creating picture stories full of elves and other magical beings, which is why Hérouard is also counted among the early pioneers of comics .

In 1905, Charles Saglio, who owned the Petit Journal de la Jeunesse , took over the La Vie Parisienne magazine , which at that time was mainly appreciated for its erotic images and stories. He wanted Hérouard to work for the magazine, but it hesitated and did not consider himself suitable. In 1907 Hérouard's first drawing finally appeared in La Vie Parisienne , for which he was to produce hundreds of drawings by 1952, including numerous cover pictures, especially between 1916 and 1930.

Hérouard also worked as a book illustrator and created picture stories for the youth magazine Pierrot after the war , including Gil Blas de Santillane (1949), Tambour Battant (1950) and Le Capitaine Eclair (1951). Under the pseudonym Herric , he is known as the author of an oeuvre of erotic drawings, the focus of which is on some fetish topics such as clismaphilia and sadomasochism .
