Ch'ae Man-sik

Ch'ae Man-sik or Ch'ae Man-shik (born June 17, 1902 in Okku County, today's Kunsan , Chŏllabuk-do ; † June 11, 1950 in Seoul ) was a South Korean writer , essayist and playwright .

Life

Ch'ae Man-sik was born when Korea was under Japanese influence . After graduating from Chungang High School, he studied English Literature at Waseda University in Japan . He later worked as a journalist for daily newspapers such as Dong-a Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo .

In 1924 he debuted with the publication of his short story fork (Kor .: Segillo). His work critically dealt with the lack of prospects for Korean intellectuals in a society under Japanese repression, such as in the story Ready-Made Life (kor .: Redimeidŭ insaeng), which appeared in 1934 in the magazine "Sindonga". A great characteristic of his often satirical style is the use of irony and sarcasm, which was given a lot of attention, especially in My Innocent Uncle .

In 1938, Ch'ae was arrested and released on condition that he join the "Patriotic Literature Society", a pro-Japanese association, and write pro-Japanese propaganda. After the liberation of Korea, he dealt with this in a self-critical literary way, e. B. in sinners of the nation (Kor .: Minjok-ŭi choein). In 1936, after moving to Kaesong , he devoted himself entirely to literary writing.

In 1950 he succumbed to tuberculosis .
