Ch'oe Yun (born July 3, 1953 in Seoul ) is a South Korean contemporary author and professor of contemporary French literature at Sogang University in Seoul.

Life

Ch'oe Yun, whose real name is Ch'oe Hyon-mu, studied Korean literature at Sogang University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1976 and a Master of Arts in 1978. In 1983, after studying abroad for several years in France, she completed her doctorate and received her doctorate (Doctorat de 3ème Cycle) from the Université de Provence , DEA in Aix-en-Provence and Marseille . Since March 1984 she has been Professor of Contemporary French Literature at Sogang University.

In literary terms , Ch'oe first appeared in 1978 through the critical essay Analysis of the Meaning Structure of Prose (소설 의 의미 구조 분석) in the magazine Literary Thoughts (Munhak sasang), but published her first literary work, the story about the Kwangju massacre Lautlos A blossom (저기 소리 없이 한 점 꽃잎 이 지고) does not fall until ten years later, namely in 1988 in the literary magazine Literature and Society (Munhak-kwa sahoe).

Ch'oe uses many modern literary techniques in her stories, such as the mixing of fantasy and reality, different perspectives and versions of the same process or narrative structures that run parallel to each other. Thematically, Ch'oe often deals with problems of social upheaval in modern Korea - the consequences of the Korean War or the partition of Korea , the time of the military dictatorships - mostly from the perspective of an outsider, i. H. of a person for whom there can be no more heroes. Ch'oe thus reveals sensitive literature as a social indicator of the country's stormy past decades or, as she herself said: “If you really want to understand Korean literature, you have to climb a unique time machine that is not found anywhere else in the world. In addition to her work as a writer and professor, Ch'oe Yun is committed to the dissemination of Korean literature through translations into French and to social issues by participating in interdisciplinary conferences such as "Women's World 2005" at Ewha Womans University Seoul.
