The distribution area extends from the Russian Murmansk over the coast of Norway, the Faroe Islands and the south coast of Iceland, the deeper northern North Sea and the Skagerrak ( Norwegian Channel ) south to the coast of Morocco and also includes the western Mediterranean in the north to the west coast of Greece in the south to Tunisia, as well as the coast of Madeira . The ray stays in relatively cold water at depths of 30 to 550 meters, in the south of the distribution area at greater depths.

Way of life

The shagreen ray feeds on ground-dwelling animals, but prefers fish. Like the other real rays (Rajidae), the shagreen ray is not viviparous. The females lay about 7.5 to 9.9 inches long and 4.5 to 4.7 cm wide egg capsules with long appendages at the corners.
