Chamba ( Hindi चंबा Cambā ) is a city ( Municipal Council ) in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh .
It forms the administrative center of the district of the same name . In the 2011 census, the population was 19,933. Chamba lies at an altitude of 923 m in the Front Himalayas . The city is located on the right bank of the Ravi at the confluence of the right tributary Sal . The Chamera reservoir stretches a few kilometers downstream.
The city was founded in 920 AD as the capital of the princely state of Chamba .
