The Ravi ( Hindi रावी Rāvī ; Panjabi ਰਾਵੀ ; Urdu راوی) is a river in India and Pakistan . It is one of the five rivers that gave Panjab its name. The river is approximately 725 kilometers long.
The Ravi rises in the Pir Panjal north of the Hanuman Tibba in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh . From there it flows west through the Kangra district . It turns towards the southwest near the town of Chamba in the Chamba district . Next, it flows a few kilometers along the border between Pakistan and India before entering Pakistani territory. 50 km northeast of Multan the Ravi flows from the left and east into the Chanab , which joins the Satluj shortly before it flows into the Indus . The largest city on the Ravi is Lahore .
The use of the water of the Ravi is regulated between the two states in the Indus Water Treaty. India regulates the river with dams, which is why it is sometimes without water in its lower reaches. The Ravi is dammed into a reservoir in the Ranjit-Sagar dam .
