Chanina ben Teradjon
Chanina (also: Chananja ) ben Teradion was a 3rd generation Tannait and a Jewish martyr .
He was one of the Ten Martyrs (in the time of the persecution under Hadrian ). Through his daughter Berurja he was the father-in-law of Rabbi Meir .
Chananja ben Teradjon continued to teach despite the Hadrianic prohibition, and was allegedly therefore wrapped in a torah scroll on a 27th Siwan ( Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim chap. 580) and put on the stake to be burned together with the torah scroll (which allegedly was Jose ben Qisma had foretold).
The legend tells the following: In order to prolong his torment, the executioner was supposed to put wet wool on his heart; Seized with pity, the executioner advised him to remove the wool, but he replied:
- How should I shorten my life when the All-father imposed on me not to die so quickly .
The executioner himself now removed the wool and then threw himself into the fire to avoid the punishment of the tyrant.
