Chandler David Owens

Chandler David Owens (* 1. October 1931 in Birmingham , Alabama ; † 6. March 2011 in Atlanta , Georgia ) was an American clergyman and Senior Bishop ( Presiding Bishop ) of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC).

At the beginning of his pastoral career, Owens was active in Newark , New Jersey at Wells Cathedral COGIC . A job he did for the next 33 years before moving to the state of Georgia. During his time in New Jersey, he also served as the Jurisdictional Prelate of the Third Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction .

Over the years Owens held various other offices within the Church of God in Christ, including serving on the General Board of the Church of God in Christ for more than 35 years (until his death) from 1995 to 2000 Office of the Chief Bishop. Owens was appointed in April 1995 after the death of Bishop LH Ford by the 12-member Board of Bishops to hold the office of presiding bishop until the next regular election in November 1996. In the elections he ran against Gilbert E. Patterson and won by one vote. Four years later, Patterson ran again, this time with Owens, beating an incumbent bishop, which was unique in the history of the COGIC. During his tenure as Senior Bishop Owens advocated a return to more orthodox positions within his church.

He was also pastor of the Greater Community Church in Marietta and Jurisdictional Prelate of the Central Georgia Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction from 1992 until his death .

Owens was married and had three children.
