The Chandler River is a 169 km long right tributary of the Colville River in northern Alaska .
It rises from Chandler Lake west of Anaktuvuk Pass in the Brook range . The upper reaches are in the Gates of the Arctic National Park . It flows north and flows 27 km northeast of Umiat into the Colville River, which flows through the North Slope to the Arctic Ocean . The Chandler River is one of many rivers and streams that feed the Colville River from the Brooks range north of the continental divide .
The name Chandler River was initially assigned to today's Okokmilaga River by the United States Geological Survey in 1924 , because it was wrongly assumed that it rises from Chandler Lake. In 1944 the mistake was corrected and the name transferred. The eponymous lake was named on March 18, 1886 by Lieutenant Stoney after William E. Chandler , Navy Secretary of State under President Chester A. Arthur . The name of the indigenous people of Alaska for the lake was "Narivakpak".
The Dictionary of Alaska Place Names names the river in addition to Kurupa River and Ninuluk Creek .
