Chantal Han

Marie Antoinette Estrelle Chantal Han (born July 26, 1966 in Amsterdam ) is a former Dutch judoka . She was second in the world championship in 1984 and European champion in 1987.

Athletic career

The 1.68 m tall Chantal Han started in the light middleweight division until 1985, the weight class up to 61 kilograms. In 1982 she won her first Dutch championship, more followed in 1983 and 1984. After she switched to middleweight, the weight class up to 66 kilograms, in 1986, she won five more championship titles in this weight class between 1987 and 1991.

At the European Championships in Oslo in 1982 she reached the final and then lost to the Austrian Herta Reiter . In the same year she reached the quarter-finals at the World Championships in Paris and finished seventh. In 1983 at the European Championships in Genoa, she lost to Herta Reiter in the battle for a bronze medal. She finished fifth like at the 1984 European Championships . Eight months later she reached the finals at the World Championships in Vienna and received the silver medal after her loss to Natasha Hernández from Venezuela.

Her first major success after changing the weight class she achieved with winning the title at the European Championships in 1987 in Paris . In the semifinals she defeated Jolanta Adamczyk from Poland and Karin Krüger from Germany in the final . At the 1987 World Championships in Essen , she finished fifth after losing in the battle for bronze against the Japanese Hikari Sasaki . In 1988 Chantal Han reached the final of the World Student Championships and received silver behind Irina Barabulkina from the Soviet Union.

In 1989 Chantal Han was defeated by the French Claire Lecat at both the European Championships in Helsinki and the World Championships in Belgrade in the battle for a bronze medal. Two years later she won bronze at the 1991 European Championships in Prague , nine years after winning her first medal at the European Championships. At the Olympic premiere of women's judo in Barcelona in 1992, Chantal Han was defeated by the Italian Emanuela Pierantozzi in her opening match with a major score ( Waza-ari ). In the Hope Round, she was eliminated in her second fight against Claire Lecat.
