Tributaries of the Guadiana (the Chanza is number 10) |
The Chanza ( Spanish Río Chanza or Arroyo de Chanza , Portuguese Rio Chança ) is a left (southern) tributary of the Guadiana , which flows through the province of Huelva ( autonomous community of Andalusia ) in Spain . It has a length of approximately 117 km and a catchment area of approximately 985 km².
Its source is in the Sierra de Aracena in the province of Huelva. In its lower reaches, starting near Rosal de la Frontera , it forms the border between the province of Huelva in Spain and the district of Beja in Portugal.
The Chanza flows into the Guadiana about twelve kilometers southeast of the small port city of Mértola . About 400 m before it flows into the Guadiana, the Chanza is dammed up by the Chanza dam to form a reservoir (Spanish: Embalse del Chanza ). 50 m before the mouth, the Puente Internacional del Bajo Guadiana bridge connects the towns of Pomarão in Portugal and El Granado in Spain.
