Charif Damage

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charif Damage (* 1921 ) is a former Lebanese wrestler . He was an Olympian in the Greco-Roman style in 1948 .

Career

Charif Damage was one of five Lebanese wrestlers who caused a sensation on the wrestling mats at the Olympic Games and World Championships in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He was the oldest of these wrestlers and, like them, wrestled exclusively in the Greco-Roman style.

In 1948 he started at the Olympic Games in London in the lightweight. There he defeated L. Rosado from Argentina , Georgios Petmezas from Greece , Abraham Kurland from Denmark and Ahmet Senol from Turkey . Then he lost to Aage Eriksen from Norway and fought against Karoly Ferencz from Hungary for the Olympic bronze medal . He lost this fight and had to be satisfied with the ungrateful 4th place. Due to his good performances at this tournament, he generally received high praise.

In 1950 Charif Damage was also at the start at the World Championships in Stockholm . He had to accept defeats there in the lightweight from August Hojrup from Denmark and from 1948 Olympic champion Gustav Freij from Sweden and therefore only came in 8th place.

The last result known from him is finally his 2nd place at the Mediterranean Games in 1951 in Alexandria , which he took in the lightweight behind Kamel Balbaa from Egypt , but before Umberto Trippa from Italy .
