Charlbury ([ ˈtʃɑɹlb (ə) ɹi ] or [ ˈtʃɔɹlb (ə) ɹi ], local [ ˈtʃɔwbɹi ]) is a village and civil parish in the valley of the River Evenlode , about 4 miles north of Witney in Oxfordshire . It is on the edge of Wychwood Forest in the Cotswolds .

Surname

The origin of the name is uncertain. It probably comes from the Old English ceorl (pronunciation: / tʃɔrl / ), which meant "honorary citizen of the lowest social class", or from the first name Ceorl . Both come from the Germanic word * karlaz.

The Church of England parish church of St. Mary the Virgin "( the Virgin Mary ) is traditionally with Santa Diuma associated, the first in the 7th century bishop Mercia was. Charlbury's Marienkirche was built at the end of the 12th century and enlarged in the 13th century. Further changes were made in the 14th century in the Decorated Style and in the 15th and 16th centuries in the Perpendicular Style .

Events

There are two music festivals in Charlbury: the Charlbury Riverside Festival and the Cornbury Music Festival in Cornbury Park. Every year there is a beer festival and a street festival where traditional morris dancing takes place.

Charlbury belongs to the electoral district of the party leader of the Conservative Party , David Cameron . Charlburys county councilor Neil Owen is Conservative and the two district councilors, Glena Chadwick and Michael Breakell, are both Liberal Democrats .
