Charles-Daniel Bourcart

Charles-Daniel Bourcart (born May 20, 1860 in Guebwiller , Alsace , † May 31, 1940 in Basel ) was a Swiss diplomat .

Life

Bourcart, son of the industrialist Charles Bourcart-Grosjean from Alsace , had lived with his parents in Basel since 1871 and, after attending school, studied law at the University of Basel and the University of Leipzig . In 1883 he presented at the University of Leipzig his promotion to Dr. jur. from. He then entered the diplomatic service in October 1883. He was first legation attaché until 1884 and then legation secretary at the legation in France from 1884 to 1889 , before he was last between 1889 and 1891 legation counselor at the legation in France.

On 20 February 1891 Bourcart changed as Consul General and Charge d'Affaires in the United Kingdom , where he was followed on 7 February 1896 to 20 December 1899 as Minister Resident Swiss representative before him on 21 December 1899, the title as the first ambassador in the United Kingdom has been accredited . He held this post until November 1902 and was then replaced by Gaston Carlin . He himself declined his appointment as envoy in the USA , where he was to succeed Giovanni Battista Pioda , and resigned from the diplomatic service. He was then president and active member of various cultural and charitable organizations in Basel and was also a judge at the civil court of Basel.

In March 1912 Bourcart returned to the diplomatic service and was first secretary of the Foreign Ministry, the Federal Political Department , between 1912 and 1914 , and then briefly head of a department there in 1915. On January 12, 1915, he replaced Joseph Choffat as envoy in Austria and remained in this post until December 31, 1914, whereupon Maximilian Jaeger became his successor there.

Bourcart was married twice, the first marriage to Louise Elisabeth Burckhardt and the second marriage to Adelheid Charlotte La Roche. His son Charles Edouard Bourcart was a bank manager and, among other things, a partner in the private banker E. Gutzwiller & Cie. Banquiers and 1941 co-founder of Staehelin & Bourcart .
