Charles Bamforth

Charles William Bamforth , (born June 13, 1952 in Upholland ), also known as Charlie Bamforth , is an English scientist who specializes in malting and brewing beer . He is an Anheuser-Busch- sponsored professor of malting and brewing science at the University of California, Davis .

life and work

Charles Bamforth was born in Great Britain in 1952 , grew up in Lancashire and attended Upholland Grammar School. He studied biochemistry at the University of Hull , where he received a Bachelor of Science in 1973 and a Ph. D in 1977 . The following year he joined the Brewing Research Foundation. In 1983 he became head of research and quality assurance at Bass Brewers. Bamforth became Director of Research at Brewing Research International in 1991 and received a Doctor of Science from the University of Hull two years later . Since 1999 he has held a professorship for malting and brewing science at UC Davis , sponsored by Anheuser-Busch . He is an honorary professor at the University of Nottingham and was visiting professor of brewing at Heriot-Watt University , from which he received his Doctor of Science degree in 2015.

Bamforth was chairman of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD) from 2014 to 2016 . He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology , the International Academy of Food Science and Technology, and the Institute of Brewing and Distilling, and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Society of Brewing Chemists . Charles Bamforth is married and has three children.

Bamforth's research interests include the investigation of the taste and foam stability of beer , the influence of chemical composition on sensory perception, the composition and decomposition of the cell walls of barley during malting, and the role of beer in a healthy diet.
