Charles William Barton (born January 7, 1992 in Luleå ) is a Swedish basketball player .

career

Barton, also known by the nickname "Challe", was born to a Swedish mother and an American father. His father, Charles the Elder , was a professional basketball player and later a coach.

He grew up in Sweden, attended the Sandagymnasiet school in Huskvarna and played for Sanda Basket in the second highest league in the country (Basketettan) before he went to his father's home country in 2011 and studied at Oregon State University (OSU) and basketball there until 2014 played. In a total of 93 appearances for "OSU" in the first division of the NCAA , Barton scored an average of 2.5 points.

On his return to Sweden, Barton, whose older brother Brandon also became a professional basketball player, joined the first division club Sundsvall Dragons . In the 2015/16 season he was named the best development player in the Swedish league (Basketligan), having scored an average of 18 points and six basket assists per game over the course of the season. In the run-up to the 2016/17 season, Barton moved to S.Oliver Würzburg in the basketball Bundesliga . In Würzburg he did not get beyond the role of a supplementary player and averaged eleven minutes of playing time and 2.4 points per game in 17 Bundesliga appearances. Before the end of the season he left Germany and then played briefly for the Italian second division club Givova Scafati Basket .

During the summer break of 2017, Barton signed a contract with the German second division club VfL Kirchheim . In Kirchheim, the Swede triumphed in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA during the 2017/18 season, in particular as a preparer and statistically made 7.3 basket assists in every game, which meant the second highest value in the league. In addition, he also scored a strong 15.1 points per encounter.

During the summer break of 2018, Barton was signed by the Belgian first division club Kangoeroes Mechelen (formerly Kangoeroes Willebroek). After a year in Belgium, Barton played again in his home country (at Djurgårdens IF his father was his coach, brother Brandon was his teammate), in January 2020 Anton Mirolybov , for whom he had already played in Kirchheim, brought him to the Swans Gmunden in the Austrian Bundesliga.

National team

Barton took part in European championship tournaments with the Swedish national teams of the U16, U18 and U20 age groups and also made it into the senior national team.
