Henri (* 1603 in Amboise , † 1677 in Paris ) and his cousin Charles Beaubrun (* 1604 in Amboise, † 1694 in Paris) were two French painters who worked at the courts of the kings Louis XIII. and Louis XIV. and specialized in portrait painting.

Biographies

Charles and his cousin Henri Beaubrun belonged to a family of 17th century French portraitists . They studied painting with their uncle Louis Beaubrun.

Henri stood Louis XIII. close, since his father already held a court office as a royal cloakroom attendant ( garde-robe ). He himself became a royal 'gun bearer' ( porte-arquebuse du Roi ). Georges Guillet de Saint-George writes about Henri:

"Since His Majesty noticed that he had a great talent for drawing, he wanted him to devote himself entirely to it, and when he (Henri, editor's note) learned to paint, he also learned everything that was essential for painting is, like perspective , architecture and some principles of geometry ... When he was accepted as chamberlain of the cloakroom ( valet de garde-robe ) after the death of his father , he carried on his first studies so happily - although his Office was divided - that the king did him the honor of choosing him as a teacher in pastel painting ... ”.
Louis XIV and his nurse, Dame Longuet de la Giraudière , 1638–1639 ( Palace of Versailles )

Together with his cousin Charles, Henri was hired as a portraitist at the court of Louis XIII, and later also under Louis XIV, after they had painted the painting Louis XIV and his first nurse, the Dame Longuet de la Giraudière ( Louis XIV et la Dame Longuet de la Giraudière, la première nourrice ). It is the earliest surviving picture of Louis XIV.

The two cousins worked together from 1630 to 1675, painting numerous official portraits, including of the two queens Anna of Austria ( Prado , Madrid) and Marie Thérèse ( Palace of Versailles ), and for portraits of children of Louis XIV and his son Louis . In the middle of the century they had particular success as painters of ladies of the court and as adepts of the traditional formalistic and courtly style according to Frans Pourbus the Younger . They often presented their models in standardized poses, one of the strengths of their best portraits is the carefully and loving depiction of clothing and fabrics down to the smallest details such as embroidery , lace and jewelry.

They created their works primarily together and their collaboration was so close that it seems almost impossible to keep their hands apart. Individual works are therefore also jointly ascribed to them.

In 1648 the two Beaubruns were founding members of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture .
