Jean Baptiste Charles Dancla (born December 19, 1817 in Bagnères-de-Bigorre , † October 10, 1907 in Tunis ) was a French violinist and composer.

biography

Dancla received her first lessons from a violin teacher in his hometown. At the age of nine the violinist Pierre Rode heard him in Bordeaux; he was so impressed that he sent letters of recommendation to Pierre Baillot , Luigi Cherubini and Rodolphe Kreutzer . Dancla was a student at the Paris Conservatory with Baillot for violin and with the opera composer Jacques Fromental Halévy for composition. He was strongly influenced by Niccolò Paganini , whom he was able to experience in 1830, and by Henri Vieuxtemps . From 1835 he was solo violinist at the Paris Opera, and shortly afterwards he became concertmaster at the "Concerts du Conservatoire" . In 1857 he received a professorship at the Paris Conservatory, where he was a successful teacher for over 35 years.

With his siblings Arnaud Dancla (1819–1862), cellist and author of a well-known cello teaching method , Leopold Dancla (1822–1895), violinist and composer of chamber music and the pianist Laure Dancla-Déliphard , he gave regular chamber music soirées . He owned four Stradivarius violins , which were later given the nickname " Dancla ".
