Charles E. Gannon

Charles Edward Gannon (born March 17, 1960 in Teaneck , New Jersey ) is an American science fiction writer. He is best known for the Caine-Riordan novel cycle and as a writer of tie-ins to games and his involvement in several collaborative fictional worlds .

Life

Gannon studied English at Brown University , where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1982 . In 1985 he received his Masters from Syracuse University and his PhD from Fordham University in 1997 with a thesis on speculative literature. He was a multiple participant in the Fulbright program in various European countries and from 2004 to 2009 Fulbright Senior Specialist .

A first SF short story, The Gift of the Magi , appeared in the 1994 anthology Invasion, edited by Jerry Pournelle . From 2011 Gannon wrote three volumes of the tie-in book series on the strategy game Starfire together with Steve White . From 2012 he participated with Eric Flint in updating from which Flint's novel 1632 incurred Assiti shard universe.

In 2013, Fire with Fire , the first volume of the series of novels around Caine Riordan, appeared, of which four parts have been published so far. The first three parts were each nominated for the Nebula Award . Fire with Fire received the Compton Crook Stephen Tall Memorial Award in 2014. Riordan is a secret service analyst who wakes up at the beginning of the 22nd century after 12 years in cryosleep in a world in which mankind has mastered faster space flight and began to spread across the galaxy . On a mission to the newly colonized Delta Pavonis system, he discovers that the earth has become the fulcrum of the conflict between interstellar powers.

In addition to his dissertation, Gannon published Rumors of War and Infernal Machines: Technomilitary Agenda-Setting in American and British Speculative Fiction , a monograph on Military SF in 2003 , for which he received the American Library Association Choice Award for Outstanding Book in 2006.
