Spatial planning regions in Switzerland (January 1, 2020)

The spatial planning regions of Switzerland are a division of Switzerland into 129 regions for spatial planning . They form the basis for spatial planning in Switzerland .

The spatial planning regions (RPR) were set up in the 1960s and 1970s by the cantons and municipalities to deal with tasks beyond the municipalities . The strong settlement development of these decades and the prospect of massive population growth made this necessary.

The RPR are usually structured as community associations under the supervision of the cantons. Most of them are based on a center, and when delimiting them, attention was paid to functional relationships. The problem with this regionalization is the different size of the RPR depending on the part of the country, some of them are even cross-cantonal. The RPR are competing on a small regional level by a large number of parallel municipal associations with department-related tasks (sewage associations, transport associations, etc.).

The three municipalities of Burgistein , Gurzelen and Wattenwil in the canton of Bern are not allocated. These are shown under the spatial planning region 299 - without membership .
