Charles Rosenberg

Charles Ernest Rosenberg (born November 11, 1936 in New York City ) is an American historian of science . He was a professor at Harvard University . His specialty is medical history in the USA.

Rosenberg studied at the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a bachelor's degree in 1956 and at Columbia University with a master's degree in 1957 and a doctorate in 1961. From 1963 he taught at the University of Pennsylvania and from 2001 at Harvard University . In 2003/04 he was in charge of the history of science department. There he is professor for the history of science and Ernest E. Monrad professor for social sciences. It covers the social history of medicine, the history of the concept of disease in the United States, and the history of epidemics.

In 1995 he received the George Sarton Medal and in 1969 the William H. Welch Award from the American Association for the History of Medicine, of which he was President. He was a Guggenheim Fellow . In 1981 he was President of the Society for the Social History of Medicine. In 1979/80 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study .

Rosenberg is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1986), the Institute of Medicine (1984), and the American Philosophical Society (2002). In 1997 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Wisconsin. He is married to the historian Drew Gilpin Faust (* 1947), who was President of Harvard University from 2007 to 2018.
