Charles Edson

Charles Farwell Edson Jr. (born December 26, 1905 in Los Angeles , † December 14, 1988 in Madison, Wisconsin ) was an American ancient historian who was a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1938 to 1976 .

Life

Charles Edson studied history. He completed his bachelor's degree in 1929 at Stanford University and his master's degree in 1931 from Harvard University . From 1936 to 1938 he received the Guggenheim scholarship . He then went to the University of Wisconsin – Madison as an Assistant Professor , where he taught and researched for the rest of his life. In 1939 he received his doctorate at Harvard with William Scott Ferguson with the dissertation Five Studies in Macedonian History . From 1952 to 1953 and from 1962 to 1963 he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study , and from 1956 to 1957 he was again a Guggenheim Fellow. Edson was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute (since 1972) and recipient of the Goodwin Award (1974). In 1976 he retired.

The focus of his research was on the Greek inscriptions from the area around Thessaloniki , which he also published as part of the Inscriptiones Graecae project .
