Charles Edward Wilson (* 1853 in Whitwell , Derbyshire ; † 1941 ) was a British watercolorist and genre painter .

Wilson was the son of a village headmaster at Whitwell Old Hall . He had studied painting at the Sheffield School of Art and dealt almost exclusively with subjects of the rural genre in watercolor technique. He lived u. a. in Addiscombe , Surrey .

From 1891 he exhibited his pictures at the exhibitions of the Royal Academy of Arts (guest), the New Watercolor Society and the Walker Art Gallery . You can find them in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum .

The work of Charles Edward Wilson is described by the art dealer Haynes Fine Art as “ very personal with a high feeling for the beauty of the color and graceful lines. His pictures capture the picturesque and romantic aspect of his subject and at the same time show an inspiring force ”. Comparable to Carlton Alfred Smith (1853–1946) of the same age , he belongs to the great movement of late romantic kitsch painting of the Edwardian era . His pictures of young girls and children playing appeared on postcards or are reprinted as posters today. The National Portrait Gallery records a woodcut portrait of George du Maurier based on one of his models. Jane Pettigrew uses two of his pictures to illustrate the moral history of childhood at the time of Edward VII in her book An Edwardian childhood .
