Charles Frederic Hartt (born August 23, 1840 in Fredericton , New Brunswick , † March 18, 1878 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ) was a Canadian naturalist .

Hartt studied science at Acadia College, traveled to Nova Scotia as a student for geological research, joined Agassiz's Natural History Museum at Cambridge in 1861, then made several scientific trips to Brazil, was appointed Professor of Geology at Cornell University in 1868 and died March 18, 1878 in Rio de Janeiro, which in the meantime had become his second home.

The results of his geological exploration of New Brunswick form part of John William Dawson 's Acadian geology . He also wrote Geology and physical geography of Brazil (1870) and numerous monographs in American and Brazilian journals. Some of the important works he left behind in manuscripts had not yet been published in 1880.
