Charles Gesmar (actually Charles Geismar ; born May 21, 1900 in Nancy , † February 27, 1928 in Paris ) was a French poster artist and costume designer. He followed the style of Art Deco .

Gesmar showed his talent as a child. His oldest surviving drawing was made in 1912.

From 1911 to 1914 he attended Auguste Vallin's School of Applied Art, Drawing and Sculpture.

He was already working in 1915. Soon he designed costumes for the Music Hall actress Andrée Spinelly (1887-1966), who previously ordered her costumes from the fashion designer Paul Poiret . At the age of 16 he started designing posters and costumes for Mistinguett .

In November 1923 he took part in the USA tour of Mistinguett. The Time weekly magazine of June 2, 1924 wrote: "more gold on the costumes and less fabric on the girls".

From 1925 he worked for the Moulin Rouge , which burned down in 1915 and reopened in 1921 . In the same year he began working with the Berlin and Vienna Music Halls.

He became addicted to opium, the fashion drug of the day. He died of acute pneumonia at the age of 27.

In just a decade, he created more than 12,000 drawings of costumes, thirty program covers and 55 posters.

In addition to Mistinguett, he designed posters and costumes for Maurice Chevalier , Raimu , Elvira Popescu and other music hall artists.
