Charles Joret

Charles Joret (born October 14, 1839 in Formigny , † December 27, 1914 in Paris ) was a philologist and literary historian .

Charles Joret, later professor of foreign literatures at the Faculté des Lettres in Aix-en-Provence , began his studies at the Sorbonne and continued them in Heidelberg and Bonn , specializing in German literature and linguistics.

Joret was a member of the Sociéte linguistique of Paris, in whose memoirs he published a treatise on the Norman dialect of the Bessin landscape and an etymological dictionary of the same (1877–1879).

The Joret line , which is as important in northern France as the Benrath line in Germany, is named after him .
