Johann Christian Gottfried Jörg (born December 24, 1779 in Predel ; † September 20, 1856 in Leipzig ) was a German obstetrician , gynecologist and pediatrician .

Life

Johann Christian Jörg studied at the University of Leipzig and completed his habilitation there in 1805 as a private lecturer as well as a general practitioner and obstetrician. He later became a full professor of obstetrics and the first director of the Trier Institute in Leipzig. He died there on September 20, 1856.

Jörg was one of the most well-known obstetricians of the 19th century and made a special contribution by trying to eliminate the often common useless interventions in healthy births, such as the mechanical expansion of the cervix.

It was from him that Ferdinand von Ritgen developed the idea of ​​a new method of caesarean section , the so-called abdominal sheath (1806).

He was a member of the Leipzig Freemason Lodge Minerva to the three palms .
