Charles Kingsley Adams

Charles Kingsley Adams (born June 17, 1899 in Sidcup , Kent , † January 19, 1971 in London ) was a British art historian .

Life

He was the son of a watchmaker. He studied at Brasenose College , Oxford and served as 2nd Lieutenant in the East Surrey Regiment in France during World War I, where he was wounded. In 1919 he became an assistant at the National Portrait Gallery in London, whose director he was from 1951 until his retirement in 1964, succeeding Henry M. Hake . In 1954 he became Commander of the Order of the British Empire . He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London .
