Charles Moffett Sr.

Charles Moffett senior (born September 6, 1929 in Fort Worth , Texas , † February 14, 1997 ) was an American jazz drummer.

Moffett began his musical career as a trumpeter; as a teenager he performed a. a. with Jimmy Witherspoon . After completing his studies, he worked from 1953 to 1961 as a high school teacher in Texas. He then went to New York City where he met Sonny Rollins , Eric Dolphy ( Musical Prophet The Expanded 1963 New York studio sessions and) Archie Shepp ( Four for Trane worked) and a band led the Pharoah Sanders and Carla Bley belonged . Between 1965 and 1967 he was a member of the Ornette Coleman trio alongside David Izenzon , with whom he was also very active on tours, recorded several albums and also worked with Yoko Ono .

In 1970 he went to Oakland , where he ran a music school and performed with Steve Turré and Prince Lasha . He later worked with Frank Lowe in New York . He worked on more than fifty albums. With him as band leader, the album The Gift was released in 1969 , on which he can also be heard as a trumpeter and vibraphonist, and in 1975 the album The Moffett Family , which he recorded with his sons. He later appeared with Keshavan Maslak , Misha Mengelberg and John Lindberg as well as with Don Cherry and especially Sonny Simmons .

His children are all known as jazz musicians: Charnett Moffett as bassist, Mondre Moffett as trumpeter, Charles Moffett Jr. as tenor saxophonist, Codaryl Moffett as drummer and Charisse Moffett as singer.
