Charles Pietri

Charles Pietri (born April 18, 1932 in Marseille , † August 7, 1991 in Rome ) was a French ancient historian who mainly dealt with Christianity in late antiquity.

Pietri attended the Lycée Thiers and from 1952 studied normal supérieure history at the École . Then he was at the École française de Rome and from 1961 attaché de recherche at the CNRS . From 1963 to 1966 he was an assistant at the Sorbonne and then Maître assistant at the University of Lille and Maître de conférences at the University of Paris- Nanterre. He was a student of Henri-Irénée Marrou , with whom he received his doctorate. His dissertation Roma christiana was published in 1976 on the Roman Church from 311 to 440 AD. In 1976 he followed Marrou to the chair of church history (Histoire du Christianisme) at the Sorbonne. From 1983 to 1991 he was director of the École française de Rome .

He is the editor of a multi-volume church history and on the prosopography of Christian late antiquity.

In 1989 he became a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres . He was a member of the German Archaeological Institute , the Pontificia Accademia Romana di Archeologia in Rome and the Istituto degli Studi Romani.

He was a Knight of the Legion of Honor, officer of the Ordre des Arts et Lettres, officer of the Order of the Italian Republic and a member of the Palmes académiques.

His wife Luce Pietri was also a historian.
