Charles R. Van Hise

Charles Richard Van Hise (born May 29, 1857 in Fulton , Rock County , Wisconsin , † November 19, 1918 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin) was an American geologist .

Van Hise studied geology and mechanical engineering . He was one of the most respected geologists of his time and taught at the University of Wisconsin – Madison , of which he was president from 1903 to 1918. In 1907 he was president of the Geological Society of America . He also worked from 1909 to 1918 for the government as an advisor to the United States Geological Survey . In 1916 he also became president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . In 1902 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences , in 1905 to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences , 1909 to the American Philosophical Society and in 1911 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . The Van Hise Rock was named in his honor.
