Charles S. Roberts

Charles Swann Roberts (born February 3, 1930 , † August 20, 2010 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was an American game designer and founder of the game publisher Avalon Hill . With his game Tactics he founded the genre of modern conflict simulation games; the Charles S. Roberts Award was named after him.

Act

In 1952, Roberts developed the game Tactics in Catonsville , Maryland , which is considered the first modern conflict simulation. In 1954 he founded The Avalon Game Company , the first game company to sell conflict simulations. He sold his game through mail order . From The Avalon Game Company 1958 Avalon Hill .

This was followed by Tactics II (1958) and Gettysburg (1958), which introduced new game principles for conflict simulations.

In December 1963, Roberts had to sell Avalon Hill due to a recession. Eric Dott of Monarch Services, a Roberts customer, acquired Avalon Hill, making Avalon Hill a subsidiary of Monarch Avalon Printing .

The Charles S. Roberts Award, named after him, has been presented annually since 1974 for the best historical conflict simulations of a year. Until 1986 these prizes were part of the Origins Award , from 1987 they are awarded independently of the Origins Awards.
