Charles Schmidt (theologian)
Charles Guillaume Adolphe Schmidt (born June 20, 1812 in Strasbourg , † March 10, 1895 ibid) was a French theologian , historian and religious scholar .
Life
He was a professor of Protestant theology in Strasbourg and remained very close to his Alsatian homeland in his research . One of his main works deals with the history and teaching of the Cathar or Albigensian sect . A historical dictionary of the Alsatian dialect : with special consideration of the early New High German period was published from his estate. Schmidt was one of the editors of the Life Collection and selected writings by the fathers and founders of the Lutheran Church .
In 1878 he was elected a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . One of Schmidt's grandsons, born in 1872, was the historian and archivist Charles Schmidt .
