Charles Soret

Charles Soret (born September 23, 1854 in Geneva ; † April 4, 1904 ibid) was a Swiss mineralogist and physicist and professor at the University of Geneva .

Soret was the son of the chemist Jacques-Louis Soret . He studied physics and mathematics in Geneva and at the Sorbonne with degrees in 1876 and 1878. Afterwards he was a lecturer and from 1881 professor for mineralogy and crystallography in Geneva. In 1898 he became rector of the university. He died after an operation.

Soret is known for the Ludwig-Soret effect (see thermophoresis ), which he published about in 1879 (also named after Carl Ludwig , who published in 1856). He also did research on refractometry .
