Jacques-Louis Soret

Jacques-Louis Soret (born June 30, 1827 in Geneva ; † May 13, 1890 ibid) was a Swiss chemist and physicist.

Soret taught chemistry from 1873 and medical physics from 1876 at the University of Geneva . There he discovered the element holmium in 1878 together with Marc Delafontaine . In 1890 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .

He first described the structure of ozone as a three-atom modification of oxygen .

The Soret band , a strong absorption in the UV / VIS spectrum of the porphyrins , is named after him.

His son is the physicist and chemist Charles Soret (1854–1904).
