Charles Théodore Henri De Coster (born August 20, 1827 in Munich , † May 7, 1879 in Ixelles ) was a Belgian writer . His Ulenspiegel , the epic of the Flemish struggle for freedom against Spanish oppression , founded the modern French-language literature in Belgium.

Life

De Coster came as the son of the Flemish Augustin De Coster and the Walloon Anne-Marie nee. Carireul was born in Munich, where both parents worked in the residence of the papal nuncio. Three years later they moved to Brussels, where their father died in 1834. Charles attended the local Jesuit college in Saint-Michel and worked from 1844 to 1850 at the Société générale de Belgique bank . He studied law and literature at the Université libre de Bruxelles with the historian and Freemason Jean-Jacques Altmeyer (1804–1877) and the professor of French literature Eugène Van Bemmel (1824–1880). He later taught literature there himself.

From 1855 he established himself as a journalist and freelance writer. In 1856, together with Félicien Rops , he founded the magazine Uylenspiegel , journal des ébats littéraires et artistiques , which was published until 1863. For a while he was employed by the Belgian State Archives and briefly taught at the military school in Brussels.

He had great success with his popular stories. After almost ten years of intensive work, for which he gave up his position at the Belgian state archives, De Coster succeeded in transferring the adventures of Till Eulenspiegel to the time of the Eighty Years' War in a literary work on par with the great Flemish painters. First published in 1867, an illustrated edition followed in 1869. However, the proceeds were insufficient to free the author of the debts he had incurred while working on the book. It was not until years after De Coster died in poverty in 1879 that the book gained greater popularity in a new edition of 1893.

Charles De Coster had been a member of the Masonic Lodge Les Vrais Amis de l'Union et du Progrès Réunis in Brussels since 1858 .

His grave in the cemetery of Ixelles was decorated for his hundredth birthday in 1927 with a monument by Edmond de Valériola (1877-1956), which shows a statue of Till Ulenspiegel. At the pond of Ixelles, on the edge of Place Eugène Flagey, a memorial was inaugurated on July 22, 1894 (sculptor Charles Samuel (1862–1939), architect Franz De Vestel (1814–1888)), on which Charles in front of a profile relief portrait de Coster's bronze statues of Till and his lover Nele sit under the inscription taken from the end of the Ulenspiegel :

EST-CE QU'ON ENTERRE ULENSPIEGEL, L'ESPRIT
NELE, LE CŒUR DE LA MERE FLANDRE
("Are you burying Ulenspiegel, the spirit, and Nele, the heart of mother Flanders? [She can sleep too; but die, no! Come on, Nele." And he went away with her and sang his sixth song; but where he did sung the last one, nobody knows.])

Both statues of Till carry the little sack made of red and black silk with ashes from the heart of his father Claes, who was burned as a heretic, on a ribbon around their necks, as his mother Soetkin told Till: "This ashes, the heart of my husband, this red, his blood, and this black, our sorrow, let it be on your breast forever as the fire of vengeance on the executioners is in her! "
