Life

Charles de Haes was the manager of the South African entrepreneur Anton Rupert . In 1975 he was appointed General Director of the WWF together with Fritz Vollmar . After Vollmars resigned, he held the post alone from 1977 before he was replaced by Claude Martin in 1993 .

During his work for the WWF, Charles de Haes initiated various campaigns, in particular fundraising gained in importance under his aegis . He also built partnerships with the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). In 1980, IUCN, UNEP and WWF drafted the World Conservation Strategy, a global environmental protection strategy that introduced the term “sustainable development”. In 1988 Charles de Haes was involved with Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands in Operation Lock , which led to strong criticism after it became known. With proceeds from the sale of two paintings that were initially donated to the WWF, Prince Bernhard hired British mercenaries to take action against poachers .
