Charles de Montesson (* 1689 , † 1758 ) was a French maréchal de camp , later son of Lieutenant général Jean-Baptiste de Montesson . Like his father, he became an excellent soldier.

biography

As a 17-year-old musketeer , he fought with his father in the Battle of Ramillies . On December 29 of the same year he was already transferred as the owner of the regiment of his resigned brother. After this was dissolved, he was assigned on February 15, 1714 to the "Colonel à la suite" of the Régiment de Navarre . He joined the Royal Guard ( Maison militaire du roi de France ) and was appointed Ensign of the Guard du corps du roi on June 1, 1717 , with the degree of Mestre de camp of the cavalry. On February 1, 1719 he was promoted to "Brigadier de cavalerie" and on July 26, 1729 to "Troisième lieutenant aux gardes" (lieutenant third degree of the Guards). On May 1, 1731 he became governor of the forts of Brescou and Agde .

On the occasion of the War of the Polish Succession , he fought with the army on the Rhine in 1734 and ended the campaign with a promotion to the Maréchal de camp . He became Lieutenant General on March 1, 1738. Under the command of the "Maréchal de Noailles", he then successfully contributed to the border defense in August 1743. In the same year he fought with the “Maréchal de Coigny” in Alsace ; as well as in 1744 in the Austrian War of Succession à la suite of the king at the sieges of Menin , Ypres and Furnes .

Under the command of the Maréchal de Saxe , he commanded the royal guard as "Premier lieutenant" from July 1744 during the battles in Flanders, such as the siege of Tournai , the battle of Roucoux and the battle of Lauffeldt .

After the siege of Maastricht in 1748, he resigned and returned to France. Here he died childless on June 26, 1758 in the Rue de l'Université in Paris. He had appointed his brother, the Marquis Jean-Baptiste de Montesson and his sister Marie as heirs .
