Athletic career

The 1.67 m tall Charlotte Geer and her sister Julia Geer reached the final in the double scull at the 1981 World Championships , behind four boats from the Eastern Bloc, the two Americans took fifth place. At the 1983 World Championships , the two sisters rowed with Ann Strayer , Cathy Thaxton and helmsman Kelly Rickon in a quad scull and took fifth place, with four boats from the Eastern Bloc ahead of the Americans.

Because of the Olympic boycott of all Eastern Bloc countries except Romania, the chances of success for the American rowers at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles were good. Charlotte Geer met three rowers who had reached the World Championship final in the previous year: The Romanian Valeria Răcilă had not finished the final, the Canadian Andrea Schreiner and the Danish Lise Justesen finished fifth and fourth. The preliminary heats at the Olympic regatta were won by Charlotte Geer, the British Beryl Mitchell and Valeria Răcilă. In the first semi-final, Răcilă, Geer and Schreiner qualified for the final, from the second semi-final Justesen, Belgian Ann Haesebrouck and Mitchell progressed. In the finals, Valeria Răcilă and Charlotte Geer were able to break away on the first half of the course and went safely to gold and silver, behind them Ann Haesebrouck narrowly defeated Andrea Schreiner in the battle for bronze.
