Charlotte Henry (born Charlotte Virginia Henry on March 4, 1914 in Brooklyn , New York , † April 11, 1980 in La Jolla , California ) was an American actress.

life and career

The blonde-haired Charlotte Henry worked as a model from a young age and made her debut on Broadway in October 1928 at the age of 14 in the comedy Courage , which became a great success with 280 performances. The following year, Henry moved with her mother to Hollywood, where she made her film debut in 1930 and represented her Broadway role from Courage in the film adaptation of the same name. She attended a school for professional child actors and her classmates included Frankie Darro , Anita Louise and Betty Grable , and she also played at the Pasadena Playhouse in the early 1930s . After playing mostly supporting roles in films, Henry's big chance came with the title role in Alice in Wonderland (1933), the film adaptation of Lewis Carroll 's novel of the same name. Allegedly she prevailed against almost 7,000 competitors. In addition to Henry, film stars such as Gary Cooper , WC Fields , Cary Grant and Edna May Oliver played in the expensive film .

At the box office, however , Alice in Wonderland flopped and, contrary to expectations, Charlotte Henry did not make the breakthrough to a star, rather the film damaged her further career as an actress. In 1934 she was loaned from her MGM film studio to the Laurel and Hardy comedy Revenge Is Sweet , where Henry played the young innocent Bo Peep. Despite this minor success, Henry mostly had to be content with appearances in B-films in the following years, often as a one-dimensional leading lady . In 1937, Henry retired from the film business after nearly 30 films and worked again as a model. In 1941 and 1942 she returned to the camera for four films before she completely ended her career in show business.

After her retirement, Henry and her mother ran an employment agency in San Diego , and later Henry worked for 15 years as chief secretary to Bishop Charles Francis Buddy . Until her death, Henry was with Dr. James J. Dempsey married, also she was still to be seen as an amateur actress on various stages. In 1980, Charlotte Henry died of cancer at the age of 66 and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in San Diego.
