The Josephine Lorikeet ( Charmosyna josefinae ) is a species of bird from the parrot family (Psittaciformes).
description
The total length of the birds is 23 to 25 centimeters. The plumage is intense red, the beak and legs are orange. A black, blue-dashed spot stretches from the rear edge of the eye to over the back of the head and neck. The lower abdomen, the flanks and the leg fletching are black. The coat and wings are olive green. The under wing coverts are red. There is a small, dull blue rump spot. The outer tail feathers are green near the trunk and turn yellow towards the tip. The underside of the tail is yellow.
Females have a yellow spot in the upper rump area. In young animals there is a green or blue shade in the black plumage.
Systematics
The Josephine Lorikeet was first described by Otto Finsch in 1873 as Trichoglossus josefinae . There are three known subspecies :
- Charmosyna josefinae josefinae ( Finsch , 1873) - occurs in western New Guinea from the Vogelkop to the Snow Mountains.
- Charmosyna josefinae cyclopum Hartert , 1930 - is in northern and central New Guinea in the Cyclops Mountains. to be found. The subspecies lacks almost any blue in the black stripe on the head and is only slightly dark on the belly.
- Charmosyna josefinae sepikiana Neumann , 1922 - lives in central New Guinea from the Sepik and the Western Highlands to Mount Bosavi in the east. The subspecies has a gray instead of blue veining in the black stripe on the top of the head. The black color on the abdomen is more extensive.
habitat
The species colonizes forests, forest edges and in some cases also cultivated land. It can be found at altitudes of 760 to 1770 meters.
Way of life
The food of the Josephine Lorikeet consists of nectar, pollen and flower buds. Little information is known about the breeding behavior.
Danger
The species is classified by the IUCN as “least concern”.
