Cheia ( Hungarian Remetei Szoros ) is a village in Alba County in Romania . It is part of the municipality of Râmeț .
location
Cheia is located in western Transylvania in the Trascau Mountains . The settlement is on the village road ( drum comunal ) DC 62, remote in the valley of the Geoagiu River at the entrance to the Cheile Râmețului valley gorge , about two kilometers west of the community center. The highest point in the area is the Vârful Trascăului with 1217 m .
history
Cheia was first mentioned in a document in 1770. Since then, its residents have mainly been engaged in pasture farming.
population
The only five inhabitants of the place (as of 2002) called themselves all Romanians . The population has decreased significantly since the first official survey in 1956 (then 132). Most of the properties are only used seasonally as farm buildings.
traffic
Today Cheia can only be reached on foot, after the only road that led from Brădești down into the valley was interrupted in several places by floods.
Attractions
Today Cheia is mainly a destination for hikers. In addition to the aforementioned Râmeț valley gorge, there are other gorges in the area ( Cheile Pravului , Cheile Piatra Bălții , Cheile Geogelului ).
There are still several thatched-roof houses in the village and scattered around the area, but these are no longer used for residential purposes.
