Chelmonops is a species of butterfly fish (Chaetodon)that is poor in species and has only two very similar species. Both species live on the subtropical and temperate coasts of Australia and are a little over 20 centimeters long. They are high-backed and drawn in a pattern of wide, black to brown and silvery white stripes. The dorsal and anal fins are pulled out and still emphasize the tall body. The muzzle is long. Adult Chelmonops are territorial and live in pairs in rock and coral reefs , estuaries and sheltered bays. Young fish are solitary and have a large eye-spot in the soft-rayed part of the dorsal fin . Chelmonops feed on algae and small invertebrates. They are closely related to the tropical pincer fish of the genus Chelmon and are considered to be their sister group .
species
- South Australian Pincer Fish ( Chelmonops curiosus ) Kuiter , 1986; occurs from Perth to Adelaide .
- East Australian pincer fish ( Chelmonops truncatus ) (Kner, 1859) ( type species ); occurs from South Queensland to New South Wales and has a steeper head profile than Chelmonops curiosus .
A third species originally belonging to the genus, the Lord Howe butterflyfish , now bears the scientific name Amphichaetodon howensis .
