The Chengalpattu District (formerly Chingleput ) is a former district in India . It existed from 1801 to 1997 and included the area of today's districts Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur in the state of Tamil Nadu .

The Chengalpattu district surrounded the city of Chennai (Madras). The area was ceded to the British East India Company in 1763 by the Nawab of Arcot , who ruled the northern parts of Tamil Nadu at the time . In 1801 the Nawab had to give up sovereignty over its territories completely, and so the area was placed under the colonial administration of British India . The British incorporated the area as the Chingleput (Chengalpattu) district in the Madras presidency . The district is known after the city of Chengalpattu (Chingleput). The administrative seat of the district was initially Karunguzhi , with an interruption from 1825 to 1835 when Kanchipuram acted as the seat of the district administration. In 1859 the administrative headquarters were moved to Saidapettai (now a district of Chennai). After Indian independence, the Chengalpattu district came under the States Reorganization Act 1956 to the newly formed state of Madras, which now included the Tamil-speaking areas and was renamed Tamil Nadu in 1969 . In 1960 Kanchipuram became the capital of the district. In 1997, the Chengalpattu district was divided into the Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts.
