The Chertsey Lock

The Chertsey Lock is a lock on the River Thames in Surrey , England . It is located above Chertsey Bridge on the waterfront across from the City of Chertsey and was built by the City of London in 1813 .

The lock is on a narrow island to which a weir connects.

history

There were problems with a shoal in the river above the current lock called Laleham Gulls . Therefore, various proposals have been made to solve the problem. However, after the survey work had been carried out, the project failed in parliament in 1793. In 1805 a plan was submitted for a canal with a lock at the lower end. The plan failed due to resistance from local landowners. In 1810 parliament approved a lock further upriver from the current location, but Lord Lucan did not want this in his sight, so in 1812 a parliamentary resolution determined the current location further downstream. The lock keeper's house was actually in Middlesex when the lock opened , but the change in the course of the river made it part of Surrey. The lock was extended in both 1893 and 1913. At that time, a separation of the lock chamber was made possible, the gates have since been removed again.

The river above the lock

Just above the lock, the M3 Chertsey Bridge crosses the river. The Abbey River flows back into the Thames here. At Laleham , water is drawn from the river and pumped into the Queen Mary Reservoir , a drinking water reservoir for London.

The river makes a wide berth around Penton Hook Island while the shipping route shortens it through the Penton Hook Lock . The Thames Path runs all the way to the Penton Hook Lock on the eastern bank.
