Cheryl Ford (born June 6, 1981 in Homer , Louisiana , United States ) is a professional basketball player. Most recently she played for the Detroit Shock in the Women's National Basketball Association on the position of the center and for the Italian team Beretta Famila Schio .
Career
college
Cheryl Ford played for the women's basketball team at Louisiana Tech University until 2003 . During her time in college, she was named Player of the Year for the Western Athletic Conference in 2002 and 2003, and was named to the Associated Press' All-America Honorable Mention Team in 2003.
Women's National Basketball Association
Cheryl Ford was selected third in the 2003 WNBA Draft by the Detroit Shock . In the 2002 season, the Shock ended the season in last place. With Ford on their team, the Shock not only finished the 2003 season as the best team, but also won their first WNBA championship. That season she was named WNBA Rookie of the Year . In the 2005 and 2006 seasons she was awarded the WNBA Peak Performer for the best rebound cut in the league. Furthermore, she was able to win the WNBA championship for the second time in the 2006 season with the Shock. In the 2007 season , she was named the game's MVP in the All-Star Game . In 2008 Ford won their third WNBA championship. She left the Shock after the 2009 season and then did not join any other WNBA team.
Europe
From 2005 to 2012 she was also active in Europe for teams from Israel, Russia, Poland, the Czech Republic and Italy.
International
Ford won the bronze medal with the US women's basketball team at the 2006 World Basketball Championship in Brazil .
Trivia
She is the daughter of Bonita Ford and former NBA player Karl Malone .
