Chester is a parish and administrative division in Nova Scotia , Canada . The original town of Chester has about 1,600 inhabitants.
history
The village of Chester was founded in 1759 on the north bank of Mahone Bay. In 1761 a group of immigrants from Massachusetts , USA settled. Chester has long served as a hideout for pirates and alcohol smugglers.
economy
As a vacation destination, Chester is now one of Nova Scotia's most affluent communities. With Mahone Bay and its hundreds of offshore islands, Chester is also a popular destination for yachtsmen . Every year in August, the local yacht club holds a racing week where sailors from all over the east coast of North America compete.
Chester is also home to the Chester Playhouse , the most famous theater on Nova Scotia's south coast.
A ferry connects Chester with the offshore island of Tancook Island . The island is best known for its vegetable growing.
