Czesław Bolesław "Chester" Marcol (born October 24, 1949 in Opole , Poland ) is a former Polish American football player on the position of the kicker . In his career he played eight years for the Green Bay Packers in the NFL . In 1987 he was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame .

Early years

Marcol lived in Poland until he was 14 years old. When his father committed suicide, he emigrated to the United States with his family . He went to Hillsdale College in Michigan . Even in Poland he liked to play football. His PE teacher recognized his talent and showed him American football. At Hillsdale College he still holds the record for the longest field goal .

NFL

Marcol was selected in the 1972 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers in the second round as the 34th player. In his first year he scored a total of 128 points for the Packers (league top value) and was named NFC Rookie of the Year .

He is still well known to many fans for his game-winning touchdown in the game against the Chicago Bears on September 7, 1980. With a score of 6-6 in overtime , Marcol should score a field goal from 34 yards . His attempt to shoot was blocked by a Bears defender. After this block, the ball fell straight into his arms and Marcol ran into the end zone. He is one of only four kickers in the NFL who could run a touchdown. The Packers ended up winning 12-6. He later said he had been under the influence of cocaine since half-time in that game .

At the. He was released on October 8, 1980. He signed a contract with the Houston Oilers , which urgently needed a kicker for the away game against the Green Bay Packers, as their kicker Toni Fritsch was unable to play. In the game against his ex-club, he scored a field goal and only one of three extra point attempts . Still, the Oilers won 22-3. It was the last game of his career, although he stayed in the Oilers' squad until the end of the season.

After the career

On February 14, 1986, Marcol attempted suicide by drinking a mixture of rat poison , battery acid, and vodka . He lives with his wife and three children in a community free area in Michigan on the Upper Peninsula . On weekends he works as a drug and alcohol advisor. Marcol suffers from Hepatitis C .

In September 2011, he published a book called Alive and Kicking: My Journey Through Football, Addiction and Life .
