Chica and Heinz Schaller Foundation
The Chica and Heinz Schaller Foundation (Foundation) was founded in 2000 by Chica Schaller and her husband Heinz Schaller in Heidelberg . It is dedicated to promoting research in the field of biomedicine , in particular in the field of infectiology and neurobiology .
tasks and goals
The foundation has been awarding the "Chica and Heinz Schaller Research Prize" each year since 2005, which is endowed with 100,000 euros. Of this, 90,000 euros must be spent on scientific purposes, 10,000 euros can be used privately. The prize is primarily open to young scientists who conduct relevant biomedical research in Heidelberg. Many of the award winners are now internationally recognized scientists and lead research groups at EMBL , DKFZ ZMBH , ZMNH and the University of Heidelberg . In some years the prize is awarded twice.
In addition, in 2011 and 2012 the foundation set up five “Schaller research groups” that work in the fields of neurobiology and virology . Another five such research groups were set up in 2017. The groups are funded for five years each, and there is a possibility of extension for two years.
The foundation also awards long-term and short-term grants to research group leaders who are not yet in permanent employment. Seminars and workshops are also financed and organized.
Board of Directors and Scientific Advisory Board
The board currently consists of Professors Rohini Kuner , Karoly Nikolich and Ralf Bartenschlager . The advisory board includes: Professors Frauke Melchior , Gudrun Rappold , Peter Krammer , Hans-Georg Kräusslich , Michael Nassal, Stefan Offermanns and Rolf Sprengel.
