Chica (Hildegard) Schaller (born May 23, 1937 in Alzey ; † October 27, 2019 in Heidelberg ) was a German neurobiologist and co-founder of the Chica and Heinz Schaller Foundation .

Life

Chica Schaller first studied linguistics . This was followed by a degree in biology at the University of Tübingen , which she completed with a doctorate. She then worked at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory ( EMBL ), the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Medical Research and the Center for Molecular Biology at the University of Heidelberg ( ZMBH ). In 1991, Schaller became director of the Institute for Developmental Neurobiology at the Center for Molecular Neurobiology ZMNH at the University of Hamburg . In 2004 she retired .

Together with her husband Heinz Schaller , she founded the “Chica and Heinz Schaller Foundation” in 2000, which promotes innovative biomedical research, particularly in the field of infectiology and neurobiology. A “Chica and Heinz Schaller Sponsorship Award ” is also awarded annually, endowed with 100,000 euros. Until the end of her life, Schaller was particularly committed to promoting young women scientists.
